The International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo is widely regarded as the most prestigious circus festival in the world—and after attending, it’s easy to see why.
Founded in 1974 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the festival was created to recognise and celebrate circus performers at the very top of their craft. Since 2006, the festival has been presided over by Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, who continues to champion the art of circus and its performers with incredible passion.
Arriving in Monaco

Once we arrived in Monaco, we took some time to soak in the sights before heading to the circus venue to collect our tickets for that evening’s show.
The festival takes place at the Fontvieille Big Top, a purpose-built venue in Monaco’s Fontvieille district, and the excitement in the area is palpable long before showtime.
With tickets in hand, it was time for lunch and a few snacks—essential fuel for what we knew would be a long (but unforgettable) evening.
Inside the Festival

During the festival, invited acts perform in front of paying audiences while also being judged by a prestigious jury made up of circus professionals, specialists, and journalists from around the world. These judges award the festival’s most coveted prizes:
🏆 Golden Clown
🥈 Silver Clown
🥉 Bronze Clown
🥈 Silver Clown
🥉 Bronze Clown
But it’s not just the judges who have a say—the audience can also vote for their favourite act, adding an extra layer of excitement to every performance.
Throughout the festival period, there are also meetings, talks, and networking events for those involved in the circus and live entertainment industries.
We attended one of these before heading to the first show of the day, which only added to the feeling that this festival is as much about community as it is about competition.
Show Time

As showtime approached, the atmosphere around the big top became truly magical. The buzz of anticipation, the mix of languages, and the shared love for circus created an energy unlike anything else.
Each show is long—around four to five hours—but honestly, it never feels that way. The variety, talent, and sheer artistry of the acts keep you completely captivated. Acrobatics, clowning, aerial acts, and jaw-dropping feats blend together into an unforgettable spectacle.
To be completely honest, I was having such a great time that I didn’t want it to end.
A Legacy of Excellence

Over the years, many well-known figures from the circus world have been involved with the festival.
Phillip and Carol Gandy have previously been invited as judges, and it’s not uncommon to see acts that have performed at Gandey’s Circus go on to compete at the Monte Carlo Circus Festival—a true testament to the level of talent showcased here.
And Then… We Did It All Again

After the show, we headed out for dinner, buzzing from everything we’d just witnessed—only to do it all again the next day.
The International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo isn’t just a circus festival; it’s a celebration of tradition, innovation, and the incredible people who dedicate their lives to this art form.
If you ever get the chance to attend, don’t hesitate.
